In most areas of Canada/USA, there are only one or two fuel distributers in a given geographical region. This means that you might live in an area where only Chevron and Shell (for example) have distribution facilities, and when you buy gasoline at an Arco that fuel was actually produced by Chevron or Shell.

It wouldn't surprise me that you could notice the difference between the Amoco and the Shell fuel, but it may have been other factors - such as that particular station having dirt or water in their underground fuel tanks, or the fuel was old.

I would recommend when buying fuel that you use a station that is popular and gets a lot of customer turn-around; at least then you know the fuel in their tanks is reasonably fresh.
